2022 Collection Submissions

The 2022 Collection submission period is now closed.

We are looking to publish four brand new comics from UK-based creatives, which will be crowdfunded as a collection in September 2022. This will be Quindrie Press’ second comic collection; the 2021 collection, which was funded through Kickstarter in March 2021, raised nearly £40,000. Our aim is to support and strengthen the UK comic scene by providing creatives with the opportunity to publish a short comic they have been wanting to work on, but either haven’t found the time or haven’t found a publisher that fits. You do not have to have been previously published in order to pitch a comic as we are looking for creatives with a range of comic experience.

This project will be helmed by Eve Greenwood, founder of Quindrie Press and creator of Inhibit and Orange Plates. The comics will be co-edited by Hari Conner, award-winning creator of Finding Home and Into the Dungeon. Eve and Hari will work closely with you on refining your pitched story and will give editing notes throughout the production process. You will have the option to have the comic completely lettered for you. Quindrie Press will then handle pre-press for you, will promote you and your comic, will publish your comic, and will provide you with your own copies to sell online or at conventions.

Submissions close on August 31st. We are not open for submissions for any other comics or projects.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for pitches for stand-alone fiction comics which will be 36-40 pages in length. We are interested in:

  • Interesting, conflict-driven stories

  • Diverse and nuanced characters

  • A wide range of genres and styles

The final comic must be:

  • Full colour

  • 127x191mm portrait

  • 36-40 pages in length (excluding covers)

  • Suitable for at least age 14+

At this time, we do not want:

  • Children’s comics

  • Non-fiction and autobiographical work

  • Stories based on previously existing work (eg. fanfiction, satires)

  • Stories that tie-in to other work (eg. spin-offs or side stories)

  • Erotica or sexually explicit stories, though romance and suggestive imagery is fine

  • Prose, illustrated stories or poetry, or other non-comic pitches

  • Pitches for on-going series

  • Work that has been previously published, either online, self-published, or by a publisher

  • Pitches from incomplete creative teams (eg. writer without artist, inker without colourist)

While we are open to pitches with challenging themes or strong political themes, we will never be interested in publishing work that promotes hateful ideologies such as racism, homophobia, or transphobia.

Who can apply?

We are looking for UK-based creators (creators who live full-time in Scotland, England, Wales, or Northern Ireland) who have a short comic they have been wanting to work on, but either haven’t found the time or haven’t found a publisher that fits. We are particularly interested in publishing work from women, non-white creators, LGBTQ+ creators, and disabled creators. We are looking for a mix of creators who have had previous publishing experience and who have not yet had their work published. You do not have to originally be from the UK to apply. As Quindrie Press is based in Scotland and has an interest in supporting and promoting the Scottish comics scene, we will also be prioritising applicants based in Scotland.

You must:

  • Be 18 or older

  • Have a UK bank account for payment

  • Be based in the UK full-time and have a UK address (if you currently live in the UK but will leave within the next two years then you unfortunately do not qualify)

  • Be able to provide a comics portfolio or sample comic pages (we will not accept pitches that include portfolios consisting only of illustration)

If you are applying as a creative team, you must all be over 18 and at least one member of the team must fit all the other criteria. Your team must be decided beforehand and we will not pair up writers and artists.

Project timeline

Submissions will be open from July 1st until August 31st. We will notify successful applicants by mid/late October. If accepted, the final comic will be due to be completed by June 31st 2022, with multiple deadlines and check-ins throughout the year. All accepted comics will go to Kickstarter in September 2022.

Payment & rights

Creators will be given a base payment of £1500 and at minimum 50 copies of their book to keep or sell. Each creator may receive additional payment depending on how much the Kickstarter raises, at a rate of £50 per additional £500 raised.

If you are a creative team, payment will be made to one member of the team and can be split at your own discretion. At least one member of the team must have a UK bank account.

Quindrie Press will have sole printing and digital rights for one year following publication. After this, Quindrie Press will retain non-exclusive print and digital rights to the work in perpetuity - this means Quindrie Press may reprint your work, but creators will also be free to print and sell the work on their own a year after publication. Creators will always own the characters, artwork, and all adaptation rights (film, tv, translation rights etc).

FAQ

  • I am not originally from the UK but I live here. Can I apply?

    • Absolutely! As long as you live in Scotland, England, Wales, or Northern Ireland long-term (ie. you aren’t moving away within the next two years) you can apply.

  • I’m from the UK but I don’t live there. Can I apply?

    • No, this project is specifically for UK-based creators.

  • I currently live in the UK but will move away within the next two years. Can I apply?

    • No, this project is specifically for UK-based creators who will remain in the UK for at least the next two years.

  • Can I pitch a story that I have already published online, such as a webcomic, but that has not yet been printed?

    • No, for this round of submissions we are only interested in previously unpublished work.

  • Can I pitch a story that I have already shared concept art for online?

    • Yes. As long as the story itself has not already been published anywhere, you can still pitch it.

  • Can I pitch a story that I have already completely drawn?

    • No. We will be working closely with you and providing edits throughout every stage of the process, including outline, script, thumbs, pencils, inks, and colours, so you cannot pitch a story that has already been completely drawn.

  • If accepted, can my comic be printed at a different size/different dimensions?

    • No, all the comics will be the same set size.

  • How many comics can I pitch?

    • We strongly recommend only pitching your strongest comic proposal, with an absolute maximum of three pitches per creative team. Please submit all pitches separately with their own pitch package and include a separate release form for each.

  • I’ve never drawn a comic before but I want to be published. Can I apply?

    • You don’t have to have been published to apply, but we do want to see that you know how to draw comics and will need to see your comics portfolio as part of your pitch. We will automatically reject pitches that do not contain either a comic portfolio or sample comic pages.

  • Will I receive royalties from Quindrie Press’ sales of my comic?

    • Creators will not receive royalties from Quindrie Press’ sales of their work. Creators will receive a minimum of 50 copies of the comic that they can then sell, and they will be able to print and sell the comic on their own a year after publication.

  • Where does profit from Quindrie Press’ sales go?

    • Our goal is to support the UK comic scene, so a large portion of our profit goes to future projects like this one so we can continue to increase our payment for our artists. Every month a portion of our PDF sales is also donated to a different charity or organisation dedicated to supporting marginalised communities in Scotland. Read more about our selected organisations here.

  • What happens if I am rejected?

    • If your pitch is rejected, you are more than welcome to pitch another project to Quindrie Press in the future, but please do not pitch the same comic more than once.

How do I apply?

Please prepare a pitch package with the following:

  • Names, bios, and contact information for everyone on your creative team.

  • An overview of the story’s themes (maximum five sentences).

  • A full, detailed outline of your comic that includes any twists and how the story ends (maximum one page).

  • Character design(s) for your main character(s).

  • A comic portfolio OR examples of your previous comic work. Sample pages from the comic you are pitching are not necessary but we must see a comic portfolio of some kind. If your portfolio includes multiple comic styles, please indicate what style you will be using for the pitched comic.

  • A completed release form, which can be downloaded here. If your pitch does not include the release form, we will automatically reject it without reading it.

Fill out this form to submit your pitch. Submissions close on August 31st. Please make sure your pitch package remains available for us to download until September 30th, as we will not follow up on any broken links and will automatically reject your pitch. We recommend adding quindriepress@gmail.com to your email contacts so any emails from us don’t end up in your spam folder.

Please be aware that if accepted, you will need to provide your legal name for your contract. As per UK data protection guidelines, this information will be kept strictly confidential and will not be used for any other purpose. You do not need to provide your legal name on the submissions form.
